A Brief Introduction to the Strategic Prevention Framework
 

The Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) was developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA). It is a blueprint for evidence-based community efforts to prevent or reduce the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The Framework includes 5 phases – Assessment, Capacity Development, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation – with an emphasis on sustainability and cultural competence. While the SPF focuses primarily on youth and substance abuse, the framework can also be applied to other community issues and populations.

 

CSAP/SAMSHA awards grants on many levels, including state/tribe and community, to support the implementation of the SPF. For more information on CSAP/SAMSHA funding opportunities for SPF implementation and on applying for grants, please see the following resources:
