Nicolás Alberto Aguilar Vásquez

Nicolás is a Medicine student at La Sabana University. He is currently in his 12th semester overall and in the 3rd semester of the public health emphasis at the Faculty, with an expected graduation date of June 2009. Nicolás possesses strong foundations in humanism and ethical training; with particular interest in the development of populations, in the encouragement of culture, in diversity and pluralism, as well as in the progress of medicine and the population’s health. Nicolás has personal experience in working directly with the populations. In the 6th semester of his career, using models of community intervention of generations of healthy habits and the development of healthy environments and healthy towns, he implemented healthy living in a town from the central Sabana sector, Cundinamarca. He has experience in research studies based on the population, like those carried out in the 6th semester of his career, which were targeted toward two main goals: healthy habits in hygiene and good treatment. In his 9th semester, he did a study on the parasitoses of the pre-school population in the previously mentioned town. Nicolás has an increasing interest in the understanding of the development of strategies, which lead to improvement in the health status of populations, through the proper use of the tools that provide public health.

Nicolás chose to be engaged in this work with the Community Tool Box with the inspiration from Doctor Francisco Lamus, chief of the area of Public Health of the Faculty of Medicine at La Sabana University. Dr. Lamus has been his teacher in the area of public health since the 6th semester of his career. Dr. Lamus has served as a mentor to Nicolás on a professional and personal level, not just during his career, but also during the progress of the emphasis on public health. Dr. Lamus has made the difference in the job Nicolás currently holds by directly linking Nicolás with the public health field through the opportunity of encouraging the disclosure of tools and resources in another language. Nicolás beelieves that this is not only helping others in their learning, but also in his own personal labor training, as he gains new knowledge and strengthens his experience with community work.

With support from Dr. Lamus, Nicolás has assisted with the translation of various sections of the Community Tool Box in order to make access to important information easier for people who don’t master the English language.
