Background and Professional Interests:

 

I am currently Director and Associate Professor in the Family and Community Health Program, in the School of Medicine at Universidad de La Sabana in Colombia.

 

Research Interest:

 

My research interests are related to the ways that educational and health care providers develop competencies, to improve early childhood nutritional and developmental outcomes.

 

 

Why I chose to be engaged in this work / How I came to be engaged in this work:

I became interested in this field given my lifelong certainty in the fact that children have the pristine potential to make a difference in the way their communities live. This took me to study to become a pediatrician where I realized that the real scenario to work on the early child potentialities lies within the social determinants of health.

 

Description of the work I am engaged in:

Promoter of different community health development projects with civil society organizations and public sector institutions in Colombia and internationally. Researcher and developer of health-related initiatives for childhood like: WHO "Healthy School Initiative" in Cundinamarca and Bogotá. Project Director in the Re-engineering and capacity building Maternal and Child Care initiative in Bogota 2006 - 2011. Clinical coordinator and trainer of the strategy IMCI (Integrated Management of Childhood Illness) in different Colombian territories. Co-developer of the Management Model for Child Health and wellbeing for the Ministry of Health in Colombia. Leader of the research group Family Medicine and Population Health. Professor in Family and Community Medicine for the medical residency graduate and undergraduate programs.  Consultant for the development and implementation of an educational program in Family and Community Health for the School of Medicine, Catholic University in Beira - Mozambique. FAIMER Fellow and collaborator of FRILA and the Brazil regional Institute.  President of “Fundación – Nutrir”. Latin American representative on the executive committee of - The Network - Towards Unity for Health (TUFH). Author and coauthor of different articles in the area of maternal and child health. Director of the Center for Family and Community Health in the Faculty of Medicine at “Universidad de La Sabana”.
