Here you’ll find a checklist of core tasks.

 

1. Identify the composition of the ideal leadership team.

__ The group has specified (in the bylaws if appropriate) the appropriate number of leaders, including board members & staff positions, necessary to support the current efforts of the group.

__ The board is inclusive as evidenced by the majority of the board members having diverse skills, experience, background, interest, or professional expertise.

__ Staff leadership is inclusive as evidenced by the majority of staff members having diverse & complementary skills, experience, background, interest, or professional expertise.

__ Current leadership including board members & staff have sufficient skills, experience, & professional expertise appropriate to support the initiative at its current stage of development.

__ Current leadership including board members & staff have sufficient resources & supports to lead the organization.

__ The group regularly assesses the composition of the leadership team, including the board & staff & identifies & recruits leaders based on the identified needs of the leadership team.

 

2. Recruit new leaders to the leadership team.

__ The group has identified the core leadership tasks & related skills necessary to support the initiative.

__ The group regularly assesses the strengths & weaknesses of the current leadership team including the board & staff to identify & recruit leaders based on the identified needs of the leadership team.

__ When recruiting new leaders, including both board & staff, the leadership skills of potential leaders are matched with the skills needed for the activities that the group has to conduct.

__ The group has a formal process for recruiting, identifying, nominating, & selecting new leaders to the board & staff.

 

3. Develop a plan for leadership development.

__ The group has a written plan to support the development of leadership within the group, including both the board & staff.

__ The group has written goals for leadership development to support diverse leadership within the group.

__ Key leaders including staff & board officers regularly assess their leadership skills & develop individual leadership goals & plans to support the initiative.

__ The group has written goals for leadership development to enhance the skills & expertise of the leadership team.

 

4. Identify methods to support leadership development goals.

__ The group regularly reviews& identifies appropriate methods for supporting leadership development goals.

__ Board members have ongoing opportunities to regularly participate in trainings, workshops, or other methods to improve their skills to enhance the initiative.

__ All staff have ongoing opportunities to regularly participate in trainings, workshops, or other methods to appropriately improve their skills to enhance the initiative.

__ Volunteers have ongoing opportunities to regularly participate in trainings, workshops, or other methods to appropriately improve their skills to enhance the initiative.

__ The group allocates & sets aside resources in the budget to support leadership development.

__ New members of the group including board members, staff, & volunteers receive appropriate training & an orientation to the initiative.

__The current leadership team, including board & staff, is committed to working together.

 

5. Support a great leadership team.

__ The group collaborates & shares risks, resources, responsibilities, & rewards.

__ Leaders are able to guide important processes & act as facilitators.

__ All leaders including the board & staff have clearly defined roles, responsibilities, & expectations for leading in the group.

__ Leaders including board, staff, & volunteers, are regularly recognized & rewarded for their contributions to the initiative.

__ The group was able to effectively identify, respond, & adapt to new or important situations.

__ Leadership, including both the board & staff, was able to connect the group to appropriate resources.
