Minutes of the Faculty Meeting
October 17, 1997
Present: Madeleine McKinley (Chair): Darleen Nelson, Scott Berkowitz (minutes), Meg Anderson, Janet Gadt, Jeff Yockey, Stacy Henning, Gabe Broll, Ted Sundgren, Allyssa Geddes, Judith Hampton, Mel Silverman, Steve Francisco, Graham Paine.
The meeting began at about 3:45 p.m.
The minutes of the September 8 Department meeting were accepted as distributed.
1. Department Budget. Madeleine distributed a budget table. The 1997-1998 Department budget line items are about the same as last year's. One difference is that bulbs now go on the Media Center account. There are also new budget lines for miscellaneous supplies ($500), a Department newsletter ($600), and a Department brochure ($700 ), bringing the total budget to $3250. The supplies line item is for small miscellaneous supply purchases, which can be placed on the Department?s credit card. Madeleine also plans to produce a Department brochure (see below), and to continue publication of a Department newsletter. There is also an additional $329, from alumni gifts, in a discretionary account.
Gabe inquired about spending for the Psychology Club banquet. Madeleine responded that last year $700 was budgeted for the banquet, with an additional $200 coming from the Psychology Club.
Jeff mentioned that Nancy Baker (Arts & Sciences Dean) had said there could be additional money for an alumni event and/or a community lunch, but the current availability of these funds is uncertain. In any case, no one has come forward at this time to lead either event.
2. Department Brochure. Madeleine noted that Willard Morrow, a new T.A., has drafted a brochure, distributed to faculty with this meeting's agenda. Comments and suggestions were solicited. Among those made were (a) including more material on the honors program, (b) broadening the listing of career opportunities, (c) inserting mention of the accelerated B.A./M.A. program, and (d) livening up some of the draft prose. Additional feedback should go to Madeleine. A revised version will be circulated for final comments before going to print.
3. Undergraduate Program Committee. Mel reported that the Committee meeting times will be Mondays at 2:00, on dates when the Graduate Program Committee does not meet. Its next scheduled meeting will be October 27. Potential agenda items for the Committee this year include: (a) identifying key undergraduate program issues, (b) considering a general review of the undergraduate program, (c) reviewing a proposal for an undergraduate specialization in developmental disabilities, and (d) exploring the possibility of other undergraduate program tracks.
4. Undergraduate Advising. Madeleine reported that fewer undergraduate advising workshops will be held this fall, but that each should have a larger number of faculty. Richard noted that more effort should be made to get students to fill out worksheets before attending a workshop.
5. Teaching. Scott reported that (a) materials on teaching are available from APA Division 2 (the division on teaching); a previous flyer from Division 2 has been circulated; (b) additional materials are available to faculty from the Faculty Teaching Center on North Campus; (c) there is a possibility of getting a Departmental subscription to such newsletters as The Teaching Professor if there is sufficient interest; (d ) copies of the new book Evaluating the Professoriate will be made available to Department members of the Council on Teaching, Learning, and Research as Scholarship; (e) there has been an apparent drop-off in the number of applications for teaching and learning grants; the Department might want to consider a submission.
Graham proposed informal lunchtime sessions for faculty to talk about teaching, and volunteered to coordinate one this semester. After schedule-checking, it was agreed that this lunch would be held on Friday, November 21, from 12:30 - 2:00.
7. Announcements.
(a) Meg announced an upcoming candlelight vigil being sponsored by Alternative House (for 10/21 at 6:00 p.m. downtown), and also that the Protestant minister serving students through the Protestant Campus Ministry needed contributions and support to provide for continuation of her position.
(b) Mel said that he and Joan would convene a meeting of the Teaching Awards Committee.
(c) Mel mentioned a job opening for a recent psychology B.A. graduate for a mental health job.
(d) Allyssa mentioned that Annie Hall, a former student, was looking for a part -time job.
The meeting adjourned at about 4:30 p.m.
The next scheduled Department meeting is on
Monday, November 10, at 3:30 p.m.
