You can honor your colleagues in many ways, formally or informally. You can send an e-card, make an announcement in the newsletter, give an award, throw a party, or hold a formal public ceremony to honor both individuals and groups. The certificate below is just one option for making an honor visible.

Here you will find a checklist summarizing the important points of the section.
Who are your colleagues?
__ You consider colleagues those who work toward the same goals as you, whether you have in common the organization you work for, the initiative or coalition you are members of, the community you work in, or your field.
Why honor colleagues?
__ Because they deserve it.
__ Because it motivates them and others.
__ Because it creates role models.
__ Because it publicizes the work of your organization, initiative, or field.
Who should honor colleagues?
__ An organization, or a staff member of an organization.
__ A coalition or initiative.
__ A board of directors, or as a member of a board.
__ A professional association.
__ A practitioner or organization in a particular field.
__ A community group or institution.
When should you honor colleagues?
__ On their special personal or professional occasions.
__ When they've achieved a goal or accomplished something significant.
__ At regularly-scheduled award ceremonies.
__ To say thank you for a job well done or for support and mentoring.
How do you honor colleagues?
__ Personalize the occasion.
__ Give them something tangible.
__ Record the occasion.
__ Think about the guest list carefully.
__ Consider inviting the media.
__ You honor colleagues more specifically by doing one or more of the following:
- Making a personal gesture of recognition and gratitude.
- Giving them an award.
- Giving them a gift.
- Throwing them a party.
- Holding a formal public ceremony for them.
