Communicating with parents about prevention:
__You empower parents rather than correct them
__You treat parents with respect
__You listen to parents without judgment
__You appreciate parents and the job they are doing
__You build on the expertise of parents
__You offer information and assistance to parents about prevention
__You offer opportunities for parents to get together
__You encourage parents to advocate for their children when necessary
__You get additional help for parents and families when necessary
Parents preventing their children's risky or dangerous behavior:
Stay connected with your children and teens:
__You listen
__You appreciate your children
__You play with your children
__You set up "special time" with your children
__You show affection and caring
__You help children express their emotion
__You persist when your child and you temporarily disconnect
__You appreciate yourself, even when you cannot do all these things
Talk to children about your values and expectations:
__You communicate and model your values
__You tell your children what you expect from them
Give children information about drugs, alcohol, tobacco, weight loss, unsafe sex, violence, etc.:
__You give them accurate information
__You encourage them to ask questions
Help children build skills in making decisions:
__You encourage sound decision-making
__You set sensible limits
__You keep your child's environment safe
__You teach refusal skills
