Question:
Hi, my name is Stephanie Dunn. I am receiving a Bachelor of Science in Mental Health and Human Services in September 2014. I served my internship at Hartford Sumner Elementary School school year 2012-2013, in my community. Since then I have been finishing up by degree and volunteering at the same Elementary school, I intend to begin graduate school fall 2015. I am interested in the grant process and what that would require. My community is in the Western foothills of Maine. We are a rural area and one of the highest areas of substance abuse in the United States. I am interested in continuing my work with the school system, working with students and educators. I currently volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters program that is at our school. There are many needs in our community and I would like to be part of the support services.
Our Elementary school just lost 4 teachers, and there were 20 more district wide jobs cut. I would like to get some information in what a grant requires ,and if would be possible for me to do. Thank-you
Answer:
Hi Stephanie, Thanks for writing to us. Your commitment to Western Maine is impressive and worthy. Maine has a long history of working on issues of substance abuse prevention. Below are some Tool Box resources that might be helpful. First, some sections on the overall approach and then the second reference is to address specifically writing grants. You will need to find funding sources (see references at the end of the first section). You will also need to find a local non- profit that could submit the grant. Best of luck as you proceed. If you need more help please turn back to us here at the Community Tool Box. Resources: Applying for a Grant –The General Approach Do you really want to apply for a grant? What are grants?
