Community Organizer for Salt Lake Community Action, currently working on a collaborative project to promote preschool oral health in a low income multi-ethnic neighborhood. Study involves 500+ children in neighborhood child care centers. Received startup grant from private foundation and donation of 2000 brushes and tubes of paste from a religious organization. Lots of in-kind time and talent. Grassroots committee. Pre - post oral screenings on participant children, brush records maintained by parents and center staff, two years, State Oral Health will use info for broader preventative / education promotion and hopefully institutionalization. Also many "smaller" projects in the neighborhoods keep me very busy.

I would like to start though with how to prevent early childhood caries. We have the highest incidence in the U.S. I'd like to see our program use the latest knowledge from cognitive science as well as to do everything in a culturally competent way, so we build over the foundation that is already in place. I'm not yet, but I am very interested in your approach. I am working on a proposal to help fund hospital-based support groups for family caregivers that seeks to bring that consitiuency together for 1)psychosocial/spiritual support 2)practical education, and 3)resourcing with other institutions/initiatives/services doing outreach to this community. My own observation has been that families with long-term critically ill members, either in home-care or nursing homes, are isolated from larger community and face sometimes sustained periods of dislocation and change with little, if any, support. In effect, looking at the difficult interface of wellness and end-of-life issues in family and community systems.
