I work for KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit which empowers communities to create partnerships (amongst themselves, local businesses and, where/if possible, corporations) to spark positive, sustainable change through the building of safe, much-needed playgrounds. (Thankfully, we are included on the "100 Things You Can Do for Your Community..." poster!) I commend your organization and website for providing loads of invaluable information, tools and services which help improve communities all over the world. I also want to encourage guests, who are on the community-building journey, to consider including building new and/or restoring existing playgrounds as part of your plan. The benefits are unlimited! For playgrounds not only provide fun and healthy play opportunities for kids, they also serve as the center or pulse of communities -- especially when community residents play a hands-on role in the actual design and building of the playground. I wish everyone the best in your individual endeavors and invite you to call on KaBOOM! (www.kaboom.org) if we can be of service.

New Bedford Community Connections Coalition is a statewide Initiative funded by DSS. We have launched our Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative working collaboratively with public & private partnerships to improve conditions and quality of life factors in some of our City's most at-risk, economically depleted neighborhoods. We are reaching out through the community by Community Conversations (informational sessions) and organizing events designed to bring residents out of their homes to meet with other community members, and to bring community members into the neighborhoods and schools where they perhaps may not otherwise venture, or partner with.

I am a Substance Abuse Counselor at Multicultural Community Development Service in Spring Lake. I am also in charge of writing grants and researching funding oportunities for MCDS. The goals of MCDS are to attract substance abusing women who are parenting into treatment and recovery, reduce the rate of relapse, improve physical health and physiological wellness, and to improve family, social, and economic functioning. I am presently seeking ways to fund the new family recovery site to pay for professional services on site. MCDS is a 5 year old agency and with limited funding has had a great deal of success in helping women and families achieve their goals. I would appreciate any assistance that you could give me in helping me to secure funding in our endeavors.

I am a public health nurse consultant working with a community health initiative in North Central Phila. I am in the process of setting up a nursing center delivering both public health services and primary care. I have worked with this particular community for about a year and have struggled to increase the partners, both community residents and other community based organizations. We are about to embark on a Healthy Start infant mortality reduction grant which should prove to be another opportunity to bring services in and enhance the assessts of this community.

This is something that everyone should know.
For the last 12 years I have been studying the housing issue. I have found out that our nation's justice department held housing as a private, not a public, venture.
Housing in the City of New Orleans isn't. Our city government has taken housing as a public venture and has made it impossible for residents of the city to discuss housing with the Mayor.
The custom of law has people from inside distinct groups sitting in the positions of authority. We no longer have British people coming over here to sit in our governmental offices.
It was decided that this was not to our benefit. That is why we no longer have them here.
We also have people from inside the boundaries of our state and local units of governments (in the state of LA we have parishes, cities, districts and special districts) in the positions of government. No one from outside of those boundaries sits in those positions.
This is the way it was supposed to be with actions our national government wanted us to take, the elimination of slum, the construction of dwellings, and the stimulation of business. And the people living inside the baoundaries they outlined were person of low and moderate income.
Community development in the past resulted with groups of people eventually emerging as independent agencies of government. Community development results with clearly defined groups of people organized as independent social, economic, and political bodies.
The people outlined by federal law are not. The do not enjoy the protection of law that others enjoy.
Are there others out there who know this and are doing something along this way?
