Aloha from Hawaii! I am a social worker working for a Hawaiian organization. Our target population is orphan and other destitute Hawaiian children. Community building is the new "buzzword" in our agency and we are working hard in partnership with individuals, families, and communities towards a goal of a thriving Hawaiian community. Through employment at Jefferson County Community Action Council I am facilitating the Community Coalition for Alternatives To Violence. In existence for 2 years, the CCATV has chosen its primary target - junior high school students. We have employed a staff person through funds from Ohio Department of Health Disadvantaged Youth grant - and established a group mentoring project for these youngsters. Within a few months - it has grown to over 60 students. We are now in process of establishing an after-school program for these youth, with funds from Ohio Children's Trust Fund. We are also organizing to conduct a comprehensive Community Needs and Resources Assessment, using manual from Family Resource Coalition of American.
