My name is Dante, I am a community health educator & researcher here in Seattle, WA with Fred Hutch and The Office of Community Outreach & Engagement. I moved here from Raleigh, NC about 2 years ago, and since then I've become really passionate and involved my cancer-health and health disparities work for underserved communities. I love the work that I do and being very community-oriented. I have a 3 year old that keeps me busy and a wife that keeps me on my toes as well! We all support each other! Not much to tell about me. I originally started a career in biology, but came to learn more about public health and community work and decided to pursue my career and get my MPH. Studying the social determinants of health and using community-based participatory research is an important tool for me, I firmly believe that the solutions to many problem can come from working WITH the communities that we serve.
How have you used the Community Tool Box to support your work and make a difference?
I discovered this resource in an email from my supervisor and the learning modules are fantastic, and it helps me to develop my community approach, as well as the connections that you have, and stories of success that I read about. This is a great tool to use! Would love to connect someday and compare notes! I also learned about a number of programs that are happening to support communities as well through the toolbox!

I'm relatively new to my community and started volunteering for a local group that focuses on revitalizing a mostly retail corridor.

We've grown very quickly and there are a lot of passionate neighbors and business owners willing to collaborate to help the main street in our Louisville neighborhood (Bardstown Road in The Highlands) flourish as a vibrant, safe and unique neighborhood and business corridor.

We’re genuinely a community-run organization, which means the wants and needs of the community drive our goals and responses. We work with people from all over the community (neighbors, local businesses, existing community groups, building owners, among others) to better understand Bardstown Road’s unique challenges and desires.
How have you used the Community Tool Box to support your work and make a difference?
I just learned about this tool thanks to the Center for Neighborhoods' Neighborhood Institute and am finding it really helpful. We linked to it on our resources page and I'm sharing the leadership information with our steering committee. I'm also loving the "take action" guidance to help us get more structure to our approaches and more more efficient and effective.
