I'm looking for research examining connection between health status and civic participation (i.e. NOT volunteering, but doing work, paid or not, that shapes one's community). I also seek methods for evaluating skills of civic participation. I work in college health.

I work for the Department of Health with the Bureau of Special Health Care Needs. I read about this page in our weekly newsletter, the Friday Fax. I am very, very interested in helping my community. 5 years ago I started a nutritional program in Garden City Mo (where I live) for senior citizens. It is only funded by donations. To this day they serve home delivered meals to approximately 50-75 senior citizens in the surrounding area. I want to do more for my rural community and want to find out different resources. What I have heard about CHIME, a program with MO state to help communities, I have liked. I can't wait to find more out. I am currently going to school at Longview Community College and hopefully will recieve a degree in Computer Support Tech. Then I want to get a certificate in programming to help with my job advancement.

Am working with a team of a health educator and PhD Epidemiologist to initiate programs in chronic disease prevention and injury control (eg. violence prevention, unintentional injury prevention, etc...) We are open to any suggestions, etc. We intend to do a community assessment to find out what is available already and where the gaps are and try to get the community agencies work collaboratively to help resolve some of these problems in a prevention mode. Do you know of resources for a good community assessment tool? Do you know of any communities doing any of this work already? Thank you in advance, Colleen C. Hughes, RN, PhD Assistant Division Director, Community and Clinical Health Services, Washoe County District Health Department, 1001 East Ninth Street, Reno, Nv. 89431 (702)328-2442
