Hello,
The Y has been a part of many grass roots coalitions and served as a fiscal agent in cases. Recently we've been asked by two orgs about how we can oversee a local coalition. I'd like to find tools, legal info about what this might look like. We have attorneys who are great at dissecting agreements but I want more general knowledge. Thanks so much, Kim

Hello, my name is Celina Johnson (16, Rising Senior, NYC), and I am a teen writer/activist for low income communities. I plan to one day build a nonprofit organization, which the goal is to rebuild and drastically improve all low income black neighborhoods in America, starting with the most dangerous and crime ridden.

I have been reaching out to many organizations and individuals that seem to align with my life goals and purpose through emails. That has not produced as much of an effective response as I would like. I soon plan to start calling organizations and individuals instead, as I feel I would make more of a lasting and effective impression.

I’m reaching out for advice on how I should go about enacting change at 16 years old.

I only have the ambition and drive when it comes to making a better society for everyone and I'm hoping it'll be utilized to its fullest extent.

Hi, we lead a statewide disability caucus and have monthly meetings. We have many members and great meetings but we are having trouble creating ways for volunteers to be engaged and a part of our organization - things seem to fizzle out after meetings because we break down around the implementation part. We are a volunteer caucus and our board is made of elected and appointed people, many are there in title only so only a few of us are doing everything - we want to help folks have opportunities to be involved but need help figuring out how to do that - our emails are only opened by 10% or less folks. We are kicking off a campaign right now for representation and seats at the table. Any advice you can share would be GREATLY appreciated, thank you so much!

Is there a forum where I can connect with community project developers? I'm reaching out because I'm working on a community tool that might be work within their (or your) community toolbox.

Cryptocurrencies are all the rage right now and I'm working on a tool so that communities can create their own cryptocurrency. The 'modern monetary theory' states that new money is best injected into the economy through government spending. Well, I'd like to test this theory with communal cryptocurrencies--inject communal money into the communities through community projects.

Hi I am organizing for the removable of hostile designed architecture that targets the homeless, park benches with a middle bar is an example. I have the community neighborhood associations on my side and now the city counselor. How do I get the MBTA, the local subway system, that has benches that are designed so someone can't lay down to eliminate this and also how do I involve the unhoused "homeless" community in organizing? Any thoughts appreciated.

I am managing the community engagement for a public urban project that has been under discussion since 2010. In 2019, the government decided to unilaterally change all the aspects of the project and consequently lost all the community trust. The project will no longer change.

My role is to inform the community of the construction phases and promote art-based and educational strategies to foster a sense of place. However, I am now facing a lot of outrage and opposition and I am unable to regain the community's trust. Any ideas of how I can improve the work with the community?

Climate Action: Individual NGO action as compared to collaborative movements?

Many groups are working to help alleviate the present climate crisis, and there appears to be a great duplication of effort, at the expense of limited resources. This is most noticeable with such initiatives as individual petition mailings.

Yes, this question regarding finding the 'magic balance' between individual work and/or collaboration is a challenge to achieving timely and effective results in all areas of social/environmental justice work. There are only so many dollars available in the 'donation pool', and protecting an NGO's claimed 'turf' may also be a factor which impedes collaboration.

I have encountered challenges in promoting petition sharing, in order that the receiving politicians or public servants may 'hear' as loud a 'voice' as possible.

Do any of the good folk at the Community Tool Box have any thoughts to share personally or any research work in this area to suggest that I read in order to broaden my understanding about effective collaboration?

I am working with a statewide sexual assault coalition and I'm seeking resources for community sexual assault programs that want to embark upon transformative, social-justice-based coalitions with community partners (both traditional and nontraditional). I'm looking for practical information on creating and sustaining those partnerships, dealing with organizations that may have a different culture, involving grassroots stakeholders, and anything else that you think might be helpful. I'd be grateful for any suggested resources, both for my background in writing this community blueprint, and for the programs engaged in this work. Of course, I will direct them to your Tool Box. Thanks in advance for any thoughts or materials.

I am want to host a Facebook Community Live Groups, on Community Organizing and teaching people how to get involved locally at a grass-roots level on political appointments and commissions, without running for elections. I honestly am working on my Ph.D. in Public Policy. I am in need of a mentor and or support from Community Tool Box. I am a disabled veteran, who was homeless and dropped out of my Ph.D. program in 2003. I later went on to become a Housing Commissioner, a Commissioner on Women and Girls and Veterans. I am trying to put together several Facebook groups, in which Community Tool Box information will be used, hence, I am honestly needing a mentor, on how I can collect and or develop a research tool for measurement. And for support of my research interest, which in turn, might be a dissertation. Please reach out to me. At a time, where our country needs to learn and educate themselves to being civically engaged and present, we need to help people and people like myself, who simply want to make a difference.

Hello there!
I am trying to develop a coalition plan & an action plan for the youth here in a small community called Igloolik, NU which is part of Canada. I have been looking for those two answers for quite a while now and would like to know where they are. Here is our vision and mission statement.

Vision
We imagine that the youth have more inherent access to information about why they are dropping out of school and why they should stay in school. A community without hunger, a place to sleep, and a community without crimes.

Mission
Our mission is to improve the lives of the youth who are dropped out, hungry, and who are stuck doing illegal activities by mentoring them with personal & professional development, telling them about how staying in school is better, feeding them with food and having fewer criminal activities within the community.

How can I implement those statements?

Hello, I hope you can advise me. The local Vienna NY Planning Board is likely going to let an individual build an airstrip very close to me. It is even closer to some other homes. One of the Planning Board members has his own airstrip and his son flies with the individual who is planning this construction. I feel the Board member is biased and should recuse himself. If the Vienna Planning Board allows this to go through they are in direct violation of current Noise Laws and the town's Master Plan. Who polices the Planning Board?

Hello,

I am a student in a Canadian university (UQAM, Montreal) finishing my last year of Ph.D/Psy.D in community psychology and I am realising my intership in France in a non-profit organization.

In my intership, I am coordinating a territorial project (initated by the government) to bring all actors working around mental health (medical professionals, social professionals, community actors, etc.) to propose new initatives and new collaboration inside the territory.

I am supervised by a Social and Health Psychologist and I am realizing now that I sharing my experience with pairs in community psychology could help me structured my community work.

I don't know if this request could be answered, but thank you already fot all the work you do!

Cordially,
Paul

Dear Tooolbox Advisor,

My community is awash in great plans - plans for transit, housing, sustainability, and more. Our community has a strong comprehensive plan that links issues and solutions. The challenge is that we persist in operating in silos, and are ineffective at moving forward to realize the bold and promising ideas in our plans. Our new civic infrastructure initiative will link mid-level and anchor institution leaders to prioritize the most important issues. We don't want to go through another long planning process - our community won't tolerate it - how do we build on the existing plans, prioritize and focus on just a few of the highest level priorities? We have a clear purpose; we have convened great leaders. How do we build on the work to move forward quickly?

Hello,

I am looking to help create community partnerships. Volunteers to organizations, and organizations to organizations. Connecting people who are interested in a local social issue, those who are currently volunteering, and those who work in the issue (I am currently looking into which issues is the biggest challenge in our city).

I would like to lead an engaging monthly workshop that brings the community together to work on solving local issues. The goals are to create a community, connect people to volunteer opportunities. Also to empower people to work together to solve social problems.

My first thought is to start the workshop with a panel of experts. Those who work in organizations that are trying to solve the issue. Then, after the panel, I would like to facilitate a creative problem-solving process (in the lines of design thinking) where people can come together, identify a problem, identify a potential solution and then create a simple prototype of the idea.

I'd like to do this on a monthly basis. But I am unsure if this is the best idea to get community connected. Any thoughts of what might be better ideas, or is there's someone I can talk to who can come up with better ideas, or other resources to help guide me.

Also any thoughts about how to spread the word of this type of event.

Thank you very much in advance for the help. Please let me know if you have any questions or things to clarify.

I'm looking for advice on how to organize a community program at my condo - to help inform and bring about change. The community is 70% retired and the current board has been in power for a full decade. Problems getting common areas maintained and concerns over financial decisions have prompted this. I found your organization searching for support/information on organizing . Any advice would be appreciated. I am good at the tech side of things, and analysis but not so much organizing people. (703) 722-7645. No cooperation from the Board so I can't even get a meeting set up in the community - they won't post notices etc. So I'm considering going online and throwing up a quick website, getting a phone number so I can record notices, then mass mailing the community and inviting them to go online where we can hold zoom meetings and discuss things via phone/video (many residents don't have internet but they will have phones). Trying to find least common denominator - and need to energize younger new residents so we can get folks to run for upcoming elections - we have 4 seats up for election out of 5. Would love to see the Board turn over and get some folks who will institute much needed change.

I am a ihss provider for a gentleman in a senior living apartment complex. My client is in a mobility charity as are others in the complex. The complex has provided shopping carts for the seniors to help with bring groceries back to their apts. The complex is three stories and has two elevators and done of the newer seniors to the complex are leaving these carts in very tight and confined areas including the elevators. And mostvecery one here has dogs. So a mobility chair and a full size shopping cart and two chihuahua is a recipe for disaster. In which one senior already got his dog caught in the elevator, still leashed and the elevator went up a floor. Luckily the dog was on a retractable leash and things were ok. .but with the shopping carts now in the way its gonna happen again. How do impose the management to make it clear that the carts need to be put away and should I put signs up on my own as the apartment complex is currently in escrow and the management could be sidetracked.

Hello, My name is Bianca Jenkins and I am a 3rd year medical student working in a rural community in Michigan. I work in Arenac County in Michigan which as of 2018 has been ranked #80 out of #83 for health rankings by county in Michigan. I am only here for 6 months, but in this time I have seen many health issues. The health issue that has been particularly near and dear to me is their ever increasing opioid epidemic. With that said, I would like to educate the community about the opioid epidemic, how it has affected and affects their community and what they can do to help but I have no idea where to start. I have been looking for statistics specific to Arenac county but since it is a smaller town, there is not much literature besides vague "drug overdose" mortality records. I guess I'm just not sure where to go from here but any advice would be appreciated.

I am Treasurer for a small 501(c)(3), celebrating our 80th Anniv, 3 yrs nonprofit. We provide workshops, master classes, lunch talks, competitions, scholarships, etc to those studying & entering careers that support primary composer for TV/Film, vid games, live performances, etc; the supporting roles of orchestration, music arranging & adaptation are crucial to a production, but these positions are seldom recognized, credited or appreciated. Our members learn from working professionals, many who are also longtime members, in an environment of mutual support, comraderie, appreciation, with mentorships, etc.
With just one part-time indep.contractor for admin & event planning (who attends all board mtgs!), and part-time website mgr, the few active board members are greatly taxed, physically & financially! We are behind the times, as far as fundraising, promo, development, pr, marketing, with no real donor database or retention techniques & no membership campaign. We have no 'for profit’ counterpart & no Exec Dir, so Board members are continually asked (by the one pd person) to do more, give more, working just to scrape by.
Suffice to say, nobody has proper nonprofit experience, so the same gal who has 'run' our ‘society’ for decades, continues with same methods, old fashioned auctions & methods with our one annual fundraiser, honoring a big name composer/arranger or two, yet we see very little profit due to big expenses, poor management of time & funds, no ‘in kind’ goods or services in place, retail spending, when we should be raising quite a profit, with name people; all smaller events are run the same, just as 30 yrs ago! Nobody is looking into grants or big sponsors, Development, or building a donor database & retention marketing plan or diversity within the board. The Board is very lax & ill informed on nonprofit policy, procedure, protocol. It's exhausting, on top of my own full time job & caretaking of mom!
If we could get funds for a knowledgeable, competent staff; and initiate new methods, we’d be off & running!

My question:
Is there an agency or community resources for someone to speak to the board; perhaps, to make a basic presentation on the importance of diversity, of having all these systems in place; keeping up with & learning from other, successful nonprofits? (Using mobile apps, software system for NP donor database & retention). One agency gave a sales pitch for items we don’t need, so several old time board members have a bad taste in their mouths about new things.
Are there orgs, that might come once to educate our board as to what we may need, where we might look, in order to help us grow into a relevant 21st century society/org that can really be a valuable source to our community & beyond. We did one FB livestream, which was very successful. The one gal we pay, has basically been running the org for 30 yrs, as it started out, more of an elite club for members to gather for lunch & camaraderie.
We have started to introduce many new offerings, events & competitions with the younger members to honor these ‘behind the scenes' positions, indispensable to a production. But, the older members are fighting tooth & nail.
I've read & researched for a year & the old timers don't want to hear about 'slick' marketing techniques, etc. We've lost some of young, new members. So I’d like to have a leading respected community member, or nonprofit advisor reinforce the need to focus on the basics, feedback to our Mission Statement, as we can offer such a unique situation & access to the guys & gals, actually, working in the business!
I'm continuing with the legacy of my father, once involved with this org, and himself, once a wonderful composer. Here's hoping I can get recommendations for the great people in this organization.
Thanks very much!
Jill

Good morning,
I work at a community Center-Social Services program with a local government organization. The purpose of our programs is to address the needs of individuals living within City limits who are faced with a temporary financial crisis. The needs are defined as emergency in nature, i.e., utility assistance, rental assistance and counseling services in relation other needs.
I am interested organizing a community task force to address those needs in order to achieve self-sufficiency. (for example, questions about planning, assessment, participation, publicity, program development, leadership, advocacy, or evaluation, etc).
What do I need to do to establish this task force and where do I begin.

Hello,
I hope this message finds you well. I am a director of a research org at Tufts and we do quite a bit of collaborative research. We have the rare opportunity to take on two nonproject specific RPPs in the coming months and have just completed initial retreat with each partner. My next step is to draft a vision agreement with each group largely capturing the mission, values, main activities and metrics to gauge impact. This is separate from any financial agreements that we'll draw with them. This document will also be important for us to have, to win internal buy-in in our networks/supervisors/funders, and to communicate what we are doing to our external audiences. I am writing to request help, specifically to see if you know of a really wonderful infographic template that i can use for this. I am looking for a one-page template that can then be used everywhere. I would ideally like this for free, but would consider a reasonable fee design professional who could do this, too. Thanks!

And was inspired to do something.
Yet what?

I didn't know why I send you this. Even though I don't have a very specific aim, I want to know more and have learned that sometimes in life you just have to dare to jump.
But I wanted to let you know I am super interested.
So could you recommend some readings? Or actions I can undertake?
Doing a mentorship from very far -learning me more about it- ( if there's one thing that I learned so far, is that I learn the most by doing it myself or by personal interaction/stories)

Thanks for not neglecting my questions

Lookimg forward to any answer

Greetings
